Superintendent's Monthly Message
May/June 2014

It is difficult to believe that we are almost at the end of this school year already! We started off the 2013 – 2014 school year boasting the highest student performance scores ever and the highest student enrollment USD has seen in many years. We have definitely become a “destination district” with an increase of almost 1,000 students in the last few years! Although the increased growth presents facilities challenges, we are proud that families choose to live here because of the great things they have heard about our district.

Recognizing the outstanding schools we have, the California Department of Education awarded Alta Vista, Carlton, and Oster the prestigious 2013 California Distinguished School Award for their exemplary signature practices and outstanding student performance. We are extremely proud that they have received this well-deserved and admired award.

Although we teach our students about citizenship throughout the school year, it is important for parents to model good citizenship by actively engaging in the democratic process of voting during elections. The right to vote is both a privilege and a responsibility. Voting is an excellent way to model responsible citizenship. Please take the time to exercise your fundamental right of citizenship in our great country by voting in the June 2014 election.
